Everybody loves the sun, especially in summer. You need to care about your skin by asking yourself what you are currently doing for sun protection. Here is a quick lesson about potential damage from unprotected exposure to the sun’s rays.
Understanding the damaging effects of the sun: The sun emits two different kinds of radiation, both have damaging effects:
UVB radiation (Ultra Violet Burning) Comes from the sun’s rays. You can see them and feel them when the sun is bright. These rays have an immediate, harmful impact on skin. Damage from UVB rays come within the first 60 seconds of walking outside.
UVA radiation (Ultra Violet Aging) is invisible but powerful. They penetrate cloudy days and clear glass windows. Even if you don’t see or feel the sun, these damaging rays are still getting through and aging your skin. Damage from the sun’s rays leads to hyperpigmentation (brown spots), premature wrinkling, cataracts and skin cancer. Inform your client there is no such thing as a safe or healthy tan. The skin’s darkening is actually the result of damage from UV rays. This occurs even with tanning beds. Sitting in the shade and wearing a hat helps but, the sun’s rays reflect off surfaces such as water, cement, tiles and grass to reach your skin in the areas you think are shaded.
How to Prevent Sun Damage? The best protection from the sun’s damaging rays are sunscreens withan SPF (aka Sun Protection Factor) of 15 or higher, which blocks about 95% of UVB rays.
