Well, well, it’s only a week after I made my first purse cake and I just made another one! I recall myself saying I would not do another purse cake anytime soon; it’s just a lot of work. But, I could not refuse the order; mostly b/c I do enjoy making these fun cakes and getting people’s reactions! The money is okay, I gave my hairdresser a deal holding on her promise to advertise my cakes in her salon.
This one is a D&G purse cake and it’s brown, but the chocolate fondant sags a little and bubbled up here and there but it looks real. And, this time around, the cake is even better than the first time – I made sure it completely cooled over night wrapped in plastic to keep its moisture.
The handle was done last Sunday just so it was totally dry and hard – I still need to deliver it to her salon and I will have to drive at 20 miles/hr to make sure nothing cracks OMG it would be disaster, after all that work. Yes, it takes either almost an entire day or two night of work.
All worth it! I am sure they birthday girl will love it and be totally surprised. I got to make sure I have picture from her reaction.
Here it is, in all of its glory

Trishan – to make a purse cake you need to bake a sheet cake and slice it 4-5 pieces. Then, stack the pieces like a piramid, carve it to take shape and cover with more icing. Last you cover the cake with fondant. Then, you need to work with the fondant to create the purse details. See the pictures of my first purse cake at http://webbyzard.wordpress.com/2008/11/08/making-a-purse-cake/ . Good luck!
This is awesome. I will definately have to try it. I was looking for instructions on how to make a purse, and this is great and sounds simple.
Your cake is awesome. I also do cakes but just for friends mostly becauseI don’t know how much to charge….so my question is…how much did you charge for the purse cake?
Hi Theresa, a purse cake made with fondant will be at least $150. It’s a lot of work and ingredients you have to use. I just do cakes for fun and friends too, once in a while. But, if I charge, it’s per servig. So, a cake with fondant and filling it’s about $3.50/serving. A cake w/o fondant and just buttercream icing is $2.75 / serving.
